Campaign

Dear Friends,

We believe the arts can change lives and have an incredible impact on our society. This is why we are longtime supporters of Global Arts Live and why we are so excited about 585 Arts in Kendall Square. It was an easy choice to invest in this visionary project, and we were inspired to step up and lead the campaign. We’re delighted to tell you about it in the hopes that you’ll join us.

The time and place are ripe for a new performing arts facility. Research shows this will fill a critical gap in the arts ecosystem in the Boston area. Furthermore, we believe that this dynamic center will stimulate a new sense of liveliness and unity in the region through arts and culture programs that will captivate audiences and strengthen our human connections.

Please take a moment to explore the plans and read the story of the unprecedented collaboration

between nonprofit performing arts presenter, Global Arts Live, and site developer, BioMed Realty.

A visionary developer

When BioMed Realty, a leading developer of life science and technology real estate in Kendall Square, acquired the property at 585 Kendall Street in Cambridge, the purchase came with the unique expectation that a performing arts center, promised but never delivered by a previous owner, would be part of any new development at the address. In the heart of Boston’s booming technology hub adjacent to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and embedded in culturally and economically diverse Cambridge, the property had come to be seen as a key partner of a cultural awakening for Kendall Square.

A community-driven approach

BioMed set out to understand how best to meet this expectation while delivering much needed biotech lab and office space to the growing area. They started by listening. Before they designed anything, BioMed “conducted countless interviews and discovery meetings with community stakeholders and arts organizations,” explains BioMed Senior Vice President and 585 Kendall Project Manager Sal Zinno.

They quickly realized that an experienced performing arts presenter attuned to culturally diverse programming would be critical to their success. Enter Global Arts Live, a Cambridge-based not-for-profit that for more than three decades has presented an extraordinary mix of music and dance from around the world. What emerged was a breakout idea for a dynamic new building in one of the world’s most innovative neighborhoods.

A robust funding structure

The project requires a total of $60 million. Global Arts Live is raising $20 million to launch and sustain the programming and operations of 585 Arts. BioMed Realty has committed $40 million to build and equip the center.

Of the $20 million being raised by Global Arts Live, one-half will be used for startup costs as well as programming and operational support for the first five years, and the balance will create a quasi-endowment for the center's long-term sustainability.
